How Can severe Nasal Congestion Along With Cough Be Treated?

i was congested and blowing my nose and coughing for about a week or less(within this month of march), and decided to contact doctor to get an antibiotic. got a z-pac(azithrom.) for it and finished it in its full dose of five days or so. at first was coughing up green mucus and nasal discharge, that has gone away after the antibiotic, but am now concerned with a fairly sharp cough and what seems like unusual airway irritation on a daily basis, with occasional white mucus. cough is a fairly frequent pop sound kind of cough. it doesnt feel too severe but is very uncomfortable and concerning. any idea as to what it may be or what i can do about it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A cough can, unfortunately, continue after a recent cold/flu even after all of the other symptoms have resolved.

This is called a post viral cough. In many cases, the cause is not known but if you are also noting white mucus then it is possible that there is a post nasal drip of mucus that is irritating the airway.

In 1 out of 5 persons, the post nasal drip itself is not detected. The use of an antihistamine/decongestant combination of medication may help eg Benadryl D, Allegra D, Claritin D or Zyrtec D.

This help even if there are no nasal symptoms. They reduce the mucus to the back of the throat and therefore the coughing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
